Pakistan: Inauguration of Peshawar Regional Blood Centre

The first ever-safe blood transfusion Regional Blood Centre (RBC) began operating in Hayatabad Peshawar this month. An inaugural ceremony was held on November 9, 2016, with more than 250 people in attendance including heads of education & health departments, health professionals and blood donor organizations. A delegation from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the German Embassy also attended.

The newly established state-of–the-art RBC has been set up under the KfW-funded Safe Blood Transfusion Project, a joint venture of the Federal Republic of Germany and the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with a total project volume of € 1.2M.

The RBC will collect blood from voluntary blood donors and provide blood and blood components to six attached hospitals in Peshawar. In phase two, three more RBCs will be constructed in the province and new blood storage equipment will be provided to partner hospital blood banks.
